Seller's Description

Included:2 x Mezzo 1 speakers, oakOriginal grills (magnetic attachment) and metal jumpers for non-bi-wire setups.Original packaging and boxSpecs (from enclosed Mordaunt Short Installation guide):Sensitivity 88dBFrequency Response 55Hz - 20kHzImpedence 4 - 8 ohmsDrive units 1 x 1" ATT aluminium dome tweeter & 1 x 5.25" CPC aluminium mid/bassRecommended amplifier power 15 - 100 wattsMagnetic shielding yesSpeaker dimensions 30 x 20.4 x 25.5cm (I measured 33 x 20.5 x 30cm with grills on, but allow some tolerance please)Speaker weight 6.2kgBackground:Very reluctant sale of these speakers that I've had and enjoyed from new. I've enjoyed as part of a home theatre setup (selling matching Mezzo 6's separately) and for stereo music and have enjoyed every moment. Unfortunately a downsize means that I no longer have the space for either setup.Excellent condition (the photographs demonstrate this), with speakers in tact and no noticable marks. Much of the rubberised plastic has gone tacky, which is apparently very common and many forums state methods for addressing - i didn't want to risk this, and don't generally rub my speakers! Some of the black veneer near to the speaker cones has raised, but I'm also sure that there would be an easy fix. They were carefully 'broken in', have never been played at significant volume and have been looked after in my smoke and pet free home out of direct sunlight and away from heat/cold and humidity sources.Shipping:***Please see my 'shop' page for any dispatch updates***I'm offering these with shipping only and they are boxed and ready to go.They will be shipped via a ParcelForce Express 48 service, as per its terms and conditions of this service, which is not a fully insured service. Once the speakers leave my property, I can accept no financial or other liability for loss nor damage, though I have never had any damage/loss issues to date. You would be welcome to arrange your own insurance and I will support this in any reasonable way that I can. Please note that there will be no covering of the original box, so the content will be obvious. Please note that I don’t accept returns.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The Mordaunt-Short Mezzo 1 earned early acclaim for packing its high-end Aspirated Tweeter Technology into a compact bookshelf form, making it a respected entry in the brand’s lineage. At US$120, this listing is a strong bargain, sitting well below the typical used market for this model, which generally ranges from US$150 to US$250 for clean pairs. The asking price is roughly 75% below the original US$499 retail, and it clearly falls under the 25th percentile of current used listings, marking it as a genuine deal for enthusiasts seeking affordable British sound.

This pair is worthwhile because the Mezzo 1 delivers crisp, detailed highs and a surprisingly open midrange, ideal for small rooms or desktop setups. Its rear-ported bass reflex design and 88 dB sensitivity make it easy to drive with modest amplifiers. Since the listing notes excellent condition, you’re likely getting original-owner care with no cosmetic wear or driver issues. With no mentioned missing accessories or red flags, this is a clean buying opportunity for anyone wanting proven performance without the premium price.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Mordaunt Short

Mordaunt-Short emerged in 1967 from London, when audio enthusiasts Norman Mordaunt and Rodney Short joined forces to craft loudspeakers blending British engineering precision with accessible excellence. Relocating to Petersfield, Hampshire, the company quickly built a heritage rooted in innovation, launching iconic lines like Festival, Carnival, and Pageant in the late 1970s, followed by the enduring MS20, MS30, and MS40 ranges in the 1980s. Acquired by TGI Plc in 1987—forming Europe's largest loudspeaker maker alongside Tannoy and Goodmans—and later by Audio Partnership Plc in 1999, it sustained its family-like devotion to sonic purity amid corporate shifts.

The brand has steadfastly focused on loudspeakers, eschewing diversification into amplifiers, turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables. Standouts include the MS25 and 35ti models of 1987, the Declaration and Premiere series post-1999, and later entries like Avant, Performance, Aviano, and Mezzo, all emphasizing reliable, high-fidelity sound reproduction through refined driver designs and cabinetry.

Positioned as a mid-tier British stalwart, Mordaunt-Short earned acclaim for delivering neutral, detailed audio without premium pricing, appealing to discerning buyers seeking value-driven hi-fi. Though its prominence waned in the 2010s as parent Audio Partnership prioritized Cambridge Audio—leading to discontinued premium lines—its legacy endures among vintage collectors and loyalists, with the official site affirming ongoing traditions of award-winning British speaker craft.
