Technics SP-12 Turntable and Tonearm Package I see this is the second one to be listed in the last couple of weeks, I was otherwise going to say how rare these are! The SP-12 was designed for broadcast and studio applications where the turntable would be built into a custom plinth or console. It uses a very similar massive motor, servo speed control and switch gear to the SL-110/1100, and a SL-1200 platter. They were only ever produced for the Japanese market.This one is in superb condition with barely even a scratch to the paint, running like clockwork and is fitted into a very nice Grace pli
At A$1,650, this sits well above the median of recent comparable sales at A$457 and also above the 75th percentile at A$1,931, so it reads as upper-end but not outlandish rather than a bargain. Compared with the typical used market in your database, it’s ambitious enough that I’d want evidence of exceptional completeness, originality, or condition before calling it strong value.
The reason it can still make sense is that this is a genuinely desirable Technics deck for enthusiasts: the SP-12 has a serious reputation, and a turntable/tonearm package can save a buyer the pain of sourcing and matching parts separately. If the package includes the right arm, a clean motor/plinth, and no hidden restoration needs, the premium is easier to justify; if not, the price starts to lean hard on condition and provenance.
