SME 2000 Plinth Record Player Turntable Wood Retro Vintage Audio Deck

Brand: SME
Model: 2000
Type: Plinth for Turntable (Thorens cut top plate for TD125
Material: Wood with Veneer Finish
Colour: Brown
Features: Cover/Lid

Pre-owned - Good condition. Generally VG condition, some very minor rub marks on top of the lid, mark to left of Thorens top plate (see photos), scratch on back of the plinth. It's a nice example. We will ship with great care. Measures about 61x51x24cm. Only three rubber feet are fitted to the bottom. We have put a felt foot in place of the 4th one but you may wish to change this to protect further against the base board screws scratching the surface of what you are putting the plinth on and to offer optimal support to the plinth.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

An SME 2000 at US$398 is the kind of listing that grabs attention immediately. If this is the genuine turntable and it’s complete enough to function, that’s a strong bargain versus normal used pricing for SME’s higher-end suspended decks, which typically trade in the low thousands of USD rather than anywhere near this level.

What makes it worth a look is SME’s build quality: superb engineering, excellent speed stability, and a very revealing, low-noise presentation when set up correctly. At this price, the upside is obvious, but you should confirm the exact model, arm, suspension health, platter/bearing condition, and whether any key parts or wiring are missing. If it’s intact and working, this is a very attractive buy.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About SME

Founded in 1946 by Alastair Robertson-Aikman as The Scale Model Equipment Company Limited in England, SME initially produced scale models and precision parts for engineering trades before pivoting in the 1950s to high-precision components for aircraft instruments and business machines. By 1961, it had relocated to a dedicated factory in Steyning, Sussex, and fully embraced audio engineering, developing its first tonearm for personal use. Now marking over 70 years of excellence, SME was acquired in 2016 by industrialist Ajay Shirke's Cadence Group, ensuring continued innovation while honoring its heritage, including recent moves like reviving the Garrard turntable brand.

SME specializes exclusively in precision turntables and tonearms, offering models like the acclaimed Model 30 series alongside a range of twelve standard arms and custom variants. With over one million tonearms sold worldwide, the company avoids diversification into amplifiers, speakers, DACs, headphones, or cables, focusing instead on unmatched engineering for vinyl playback.

Regarded as the gold standard in high-end analog audio, SME commands a niche position among discerning audiophiles for its Steyning facility—the world's largest and best-equipped for precision pick-up arms and turntables. Synonymous with industry-leading build quality and sonic refinement, it appeals to serious collectors and professionals who prioritize mechanical perfection over mass-market compromises.
