That said, the Quad 22 is a classic valve preamp with real collector appeal and a very distinctive, refined presentation when properly restored. If it’s complete, original, and healthy, the appeal is the sound and the history as much as the function. For this money, though, I’d want clear evidence of service history, working controls, and originality of key parts; on a unit this old, condition matters a lot more than on newer gear.

Quad, the venerable British hi-fi brand, traces its origins to 1936 in London, when engineer Peter J. Walker founded S.P. Fidelity Sound Systems, soon renamed the Acoustical Manufacturing Company. Relocating to Huntingdon in 1941 after wartime bombing, the firm shifted from public address gear to domestic audio amid post-war demand for superior sound reproduction.
