Seller's Description

ME Sound (Australia) 240 Integrated Amplifier (Solid State) My first true high quality amplifier and it has served me well over the years. Purchased new by me back in 2002 from Rage Audio.  Many years later it was upgraded to the high cap version and a few years ago it had further upgrades but I'm not too sure on the technical side of that. I do know that it involved the installation of WIMA caps.    It has been meticulously looked after since new. It did have its usual ten year service with the replacement of certain caps and foam around the fan.     It comes with the famous blue sock, origin

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The ME Sound Australia 240 integrated amp originally retailed new for around AUD3,000 back in its day, making this AUD1,500 asking price look tempting at first glance. Against our recent comps of 14 AUD listings—median AUD1,588, with 25th percentile at AUD1,588 and 75th at AUD1,662—it's a solid bargain, especially given the unknown condition. You're under the market floor here, so snag it if it checks out.

Buyers, prioritise a full power-on test: these older Aussie designs can suffer capacitor degradation in the power supply after 15-20 years, leading to hum or dropout. Verify the original remote, manual, and RCA inputs work, and probe the seller on service history—any recap mods would be a bonus. Condition unknowns make this a calculated punt, but at this price, it's worth the diligence.

About ME Sound

ME Sound emerged from Australia in 1976, founded by Peter Stein, an engineer passionate about high-fidelity amplification. Stein established the brand in the vibrant local hi-fi scene, crafting components that prioritized power and precision during the golden era of analog audio. Though Stein passed away in 2022, his legacy endures through a dedicated following that values the brand's roots in hands-on Australian manufacturing.

The company specialized in high-current power amplifiers, with iconic models like the ME850, ME1400, and ME1500 standing out for their robust delivery and dynamic headroom. These were often paired with preamplifiers in complete systems, appealing to enthusiasts seeking uncolored, authoritative sound. ME Sound focused narrowly on amplification rather than diversifying into speakers, DACs, or headphones, emphasizing solid-state designs built for longevity.

Positioned as a niche boutique in the vintage hi-fi market, ME Sound commands respect among collectors for its mid-tier pricing and superior second-hand value. The original run ceased around 2003 amid liquidation, sparking rumors of revival, though no verified new production has materialized. Today, it thrives in the used arena, where well-preserved units rival contemporaries for sheer drive and musicality.
