Overview

Unimposing but powerful, ATC's SCM40 is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker using in-house designed drivers in an attractive cherry timber veneer.

ATC’s well regarded 75mm soft-dome midrange driver offers wide dispersion for off-axis listening, and a natural timbre, with a 25mm soft dome tweeter that integrates perfectly.

Low-frequency performance is handled by a 164mm long-throw bass driver, the magnet assembly of which has a hole through the pole to reduce air flow noise at low frequencies.

The heavily braced construction minimises resonance and stored energy, avoiding the colouration often introduced by speaker cabinets.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At A$5,400, this sits just under the A$5,498 25th percentile and below the A$5,597 median for recent comparables, so it reads as a genuinely strong buy rather than merely fair. It’s not a deep bargain, but it is priced on the buyer-friendly side of the market for this model.

That makes it easier to focus on the upside: the SCM40 Gen 2 is widely respected for its scale, tonal purity, and excellent midrange openness, with real bass authority for a floorstander of this size. If the pair is clean, original, and fully functioning, this is the sort of listing that rewards a quick move; just confirm cabinet condition, driver health, and whether spikes/grilles/original packaging are included.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About ATC

ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company), a British engineering powerhouse, was founded in 1974 by innovative loudspeaker designer Billy Woodman. Initially focused on crafting custom drive units for the professional audio sector, the company quickly gained acclaim with its 12-inch PA75-314 driver, renowned for superior power handling and minimal distortion at high sound pressure levels. In 1976, ATC introduced the groundbreaking SM75-150 soft dome midrange driver, revolutionizing dispersion, bandwidth, and clarity in studio monitors.

The brand specializes in high-precision loudspeakers, designing and manufacturing its own drivers—including tweeters, midrange, and bass units—in-house for both professional and home applications. Its SCM series offers a spectrum from compact models like the SCM7 to larger formats, available in active and passive configurations. ATC also produces standalone electronics, such as preamplifiers, power amplifiers, and integrated amps like the SIA2-150, all built to uncompromising standards of accuracy and reliability.

ATC commands a elite position in the high-end hi-fi market, revered by recording studios worldwide for its transparent, detail-revealing monitors and by discerning audiophiles for domestic speakers that deliver reference-grade performance. A professional ethos, advanced materials, and innovations like the Super Linear Driver—slashing distortion in the vocal range—cement its status as a boutique leader, where precision engineering trumps mass production.
