Overview

Luxman's L-509X integrated amplifier has a slew of high level technology and design principals, but they're easy to forget when the music starts to play and the true analogue VU-meters start to dance.

Seriously though, Luxman has spared no expense designing and building the 509X, in their own words a "refinement of separates in a single unit". The amplifier section is based on a 3-stage Darlington circuit where only the distorted components of the audio signal from the output of the amplification circuit are fed back.

The unit can be used as a power amplifier bypassing the internal preamp section, or as a preamplifier bypassing the internal power amp output.

Vinyl enthusiasts are also covered with a single phono input switchable from MM to MC via the front panel.

Not one, but two XLR inputs avoid you having to pick which input device to run balanced.

Crack-resistant peel coat PCBs for the amplifier boards feature the non-angled, direct wiring pattern, known as the original LUXMAN Beeline construction.

The power supply features a 600 VA EI-core-type power transformer and independent left and right channel large capacity blocking capacitors with 10,000μFx4 per channel.

• ODNF (Only Distortion Negative Feedback) Version 4.0 innovative amplification feedback circuit

• Copper alloy terminals

• Gradation cast-iron feet

• High stability power supply

• Increased damping factor

• New LECUA (Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Attenuator) 1000 computerized attenuator

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Compared with the usual used-market alternative of a good integrated amp in this tier, A$9,800 is on the ambitious side for the Luxman L-509X against your own recent comps: it’s above the 75th percentile of A$9,157. It’s not wildly out of line for a sought-after model, but it does ask a premium over the typical asking band around A$8,514, so I’d want either standout condition or extras to justify it.

That said, the L-509X is a genuinely well-regarded all-in-one: authoritative drive, excellent phono stage, and the sort of refined, low-fatigue presentation Luxman does so well. For a vinyl-focused buyer, it’s a serious endgame-style integrated if the service history is clean and the unit has the original remote, box, and manual. At this price, I’d mainly verify that the phono section and all inputs are working properly.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Luxman

Luxman traces its origins to 1925 in Osaka, Japan, when brothers T. Hayakawa and K. Yoshikawa launched a radio equipment division within their Kinsuido picture frame import business, coinciding with Japan's inaugural radio broadcast. Initially importing components, the company soon pivoted to in-house manufacturing of transformers and switches, birthing the Luxman brand and establishing it as one of Japan's oldest electronic component makers. This heritage of precision engineering has endured through ownership shifts, including stints with Alpine and Samsung, before returning to Japanese hands in the early 2000s under dedicated Luxman Corporation.

The brand specializes in luxury high-end audio components, with a storied emphasis on amplifiers—both integrated and power models—preamplifiers, and receivers renowned for their warm, detailed sound. Luxman also produces turntables, CD players, tape decks, and speakers, alongside modern digital offerings like DACs, all handcrafted in Japan with custom parts and dual-mono designs for ultimate fidelity.

Positioned firmly in the high-end market, Luxman commands respect among discerning audiophiles for its timeless aesthetics, uncompromising build quality, and sonic refinement that bridges vintage warmth with cutting-edge performance. Classics like the 1970s CL-32 preamp and 1980s L-507 integrated amplifier fuel its collector appeal, while contemporary lines reaffirm its status as a boutique benchmark for those seeking "Ultimate Fidelity since 1925."
