Up for sale is the legendary NAD 218 THX, a true powerhouse capable of delivering massive current reserves. The unit functions perfectly and is sold as shown in the photos. Given its age, it shows a few minor cosmetic scratches, but overall it is in excellent condition. In 2023, the bias current was calibrated according to the official service manual. All manuals are included, including the service manual with the schematics. The technical specifications state 225W per channel into 8 Ohms, but in practice, it drives even demanding loads with ease – it was used successfully with large Magnepan electrostatic panels. The sound is not as refined in the highs as hi-end electronics like Mark Levinson or Pass, but it offers much more than just brute power: rich mids, deep and controlled bass, and a musical, engaging character. At this price point, it is difficult to find this much power with a similar level of musicality. Efficient and stable under load, it remains cool even when pushed hard.It is not as small or lightweight as modern Class D amplifiers, but it is light-years ahead of their "plastic" sound.
At US$911, this lands above the 75th percentile of the recent comp set, so it reads as ambitious rather than fair against a typical used market centered at US$813[ground truth]. It’s not wildly out of line, but I’d want either clearly stronger condition, extras, or a seller who is firm because of provenance before paying that ask.
The upside here is that this is a respected, no-nonsense power amp: THX-rated NAD gear is valued for clean, controlled delivery and a very usable, high-current feel that suits demanding speakers well. If it’s genuinely tidy and complete, that supports interest; if condition is unknown, I’d scrutinize channels, bias/noise, and any signs of age-related service need before treating the premium as justified.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
NAD Electronics was founded in 1972 in London by a group of European audio importers frustrated with the hype surrounding Japanese hi-fi products. Led by visionary American executive Martin L. Borish and brilliant engineer Bjorn Erik Edvardsen, the company emerged from a quest to deliver high-performance audio at accessible prices. Their breakthrough came with the NAD 3020 integrated amplifier, the best-selling hi-fi amp in history, which embodied a philosophy of stripping away non-essentials to prioritize pure sound quality.
The brand focuses on core hi-fi categories, excelling in amplifiers—pioneering Class A/B, Class G, and hybrid digital designs—alongside integrated receivers, AV processors, turntables, CD and cassette players, and modern streamers. While not venturing into speakers, headphones, or cables, NAD emphasizes source components and amplification that integrate seamlessly into home theater and custom installation setups, always upholding principles of innovation, simplicity, performance, and value.
Today, as part of Canada's Lenbrook Group and sold in over 80 countries, NAD holds a commanding mid-tier position in the market, revered by audiophiles for affordable excellence rather than ultra-high-end excess. Its "Truth in Power" legacy earns cult status among knowledgeable buyers seeking reliable, award-winning gear that punches above its price, blending vintage heritage with contemporary streaming and hybrid tech.
