For a 1980s deck, timing matters: the LX-5 is a respected classic, but at A$2,250 it’s well into ambitious territory versus typical used market reality. Even allowing for strong condition and a serviced unit, this sits above what most buyers would call fair in AUD, unless it’s recently restored, fully documented, and exceptionally clean. In plain terms, it’s priced like a premium collectible rather than a normal working deck.
What keeps the LX-5 desirable is its sound quality and build: Nakamichi’s three-head layout, manual bias control, and very competent transport made it a serious performer, not just a badge piece. When properly set up, it can sound excellent with a wide range of tapes. The upside is longevity if it’s been serviced, but at this price I’d want proof of recent maintenance, calibration, and all functions behaving perfectly before considering it.
