Overview

Avalon Acoustics' Opus Ceramique was conceived to scale down the award winning original Opus speaker to better suit more moderate sized rooms.  The Ceramique is built entirely by hand and engineered using in-house proprietary electronic and acoustic measurement standards.

In Avalon Acoustics' words "Purity of musical communication" was the design brief, and it's certainly fair to say it was achieved.

We find this model really sings with class-A, tube based amplifiers.

• Advanced ultra-light weight ceramic driver diaphragm materials minimize energy storage and time-domain distortion

• Each driver individually tested and matched for optimum performance

• Smooth, wide polar response for superlative imaging capabilities

• Moderate impedance characteristic allows for ideal interface with any amplifier

• Star-grounding techniques eliminate signal modulation

• Crossover circuitry is hard-wired with surface-only conductors, eliminating deleterious sonic effects of printed-circuit boards

• Oversize screw terminals

• Careful crossover control of all magnetic field interaction

• Polypropylene capacitors used exclusively to minimize energy storage

• Proprietary damping circuits control each driver's electrical parameters, reducing interaction with the amplifier

• Constrained-mode damping system absorbs cabinet vibrations

• Four inch thick front panel supplies acoustically inert wave-launch platform

• Acoustically-engineered grille assembly decreases edge diffraction effects

• Distinctive faceted cabinet design provides optimal polar characteristics

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

A$8,200 is fair-to-strong for these if the cabinets and drivers are original and the cosmetics are genuinely clean; that sits well under what a top-tier Avalon floorstander of this class tends to command on the used market, and the quoted A$8,200 is in line with a serious audiophile speaker rather than a bargain-bin buy. The only thing that would make me hesitate is unclear condition, because at this level the value swings a lot with veneer, driver health, and whether the original crates and hardware are included.

What makes them worth chasing is the usual Avalon mix of low distortion, precise imaging, and a big, coherent presentation with real bass weight; they’re the kind of speakers that can make a system feel “finished” if the room and amplification are up to it. A clean set with crates, adapters, and a known service history is especially attractive, because shipping and replacement parts are not trivial on something this substantial.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Avalon Acoustics

Avalon Acoustics traces its origins to the mid-1980s in the United States, with production of its pioneering Ascent model commencing in 1986. Founded by Charles Hansen—who later established Ayre Acoustics—the brand emerged from a passion for music reproduction, drawing on the expertise of engineers, musicians, and recording professionals. Based in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Avalon has upheld a heritage of meticulous craftsmanship over four decades, pioneering innovations like deep cabinet bevels for superior acoustic performance and dynamic energy transfer.[web:1][web:5][web:6][web:7]

The company specializes exclusively in high-end loudspeakers, spanning compact monitors to towering floorstanders. Renowned for their vanishingly low distortion, pinpoint imaging, and neutrality that rivals mini-monitors even in flagship models, Avalon's transducers prioritize musicality through bespoke driver development, precision cabinetry, and advanced 3D soundstaging. Legacy lines like the Precision Monitors embody milestones in detail recovery and fidelity, while eschewing diversification into amplifiers, DACs, or accessories.[web:1][web:3]

Positioned firmly in the ultra-high-end market, Avalon commands respect among discerning audiophiles for reference-level performance and build quality rivaling six-figure icons like Magico and Rockport. Its speakers deliver source fidelity with extraordinary standards, earning iconic status without widespread hype, appealing to buyers seeking boutique excellence over mass appeal.[web:2][web:3]
