Seller's Description

I purchased this unit completely inoperable. The thermal cutoff was open from fatigue and was replaced. Powers on now, some audio from the speaker outputs. All dials and controls need to be Deoxed for the amp to be fully functional. Also the VU Meter lighting needs to be replaced. Power supply has new capacitors installed except for the large main caps, they still tested good. See photos. I will include the original caps for reference. Front panel is in good shape for its age. Lid needs to be refinished, has light surface rust in a couple places. This Sony amp is dual voltage (120v/240v) and is a AEP/UK/E spec amplifier. This model wasn’t originally sold in the US. This amp is quite heavy and will be packaged carefully. Shipping is free to the lower 48 states only. Overseas or AK/HI will require an additional shipping charge.Key SpecificationsPower Output: 100W + 100W (8\(\Omega \), 20Hz - 20kHz)Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): Less than 0.03% (at rated output)Frequency Response: 5Hz - 35kHzDamping Factor: 50 (1kHz, 8\(\Omega \))Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR): Phono: 76dB, Tuner/Aux: 100dB [1, 2, 3]Inputs & FeaturesPhono Inputs: Features two switchable phono inputs (supports MM and MC cartridges)Auxiliary/Line Inputs: Tuner, Aux 1, Aux 2, and two Tape inputs/outputsPre-amp/Power-amp: Separable pre-out and main-in capabilities [1]

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At US$900, this Sony TA-F6B is ambitiously priced compared to the typical used market, where the median sits at US$116 and the 75th percentile caps at US$233. While the listing claims “partially restored” and “dual voltage,” the asking price exceeds the 75th percentile by nearly fourfold, making it far from a bargain and more of a collector’s premium.

The TA-F6B is a well-regarded late-70s integrated amp known for its superb build quality, fabulous phono stage, and clean, wide soundstage. Its 100W+100W output and low THD (<0.03%) suit vintage and modern systems alike. However, given the high price, buyers should confirm the restoration scope, verify the switching PSU condition (a known weak point), and ensure all accessories are included before committing.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Sony

Sony emerged from the ruins of post-World War II Japan, founded on May 7, 1946, by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district. Starting with radio repairs and Japan's first magnetic tape recorder, the duo secured transistor licensing from Bell Labs, pioneering the TR-55 transistor radio in 1955. Renamed Sony Corporation in 1958—from the Latin "sonus" for sound—the brand symbolized Japan's ascent from cheap imitations to innovative leadership, fueled by Ibuka's engineering prowess and Morita's global marketing vision.

Sony's hi-fi legacy spans headphones, amplifiers, speakers, turntables, and DACs, alongside landmark formats like the Compact Disc in 1982 and Blu-ray. Iconic products include the Walkman for portable audio revolution and Trinitron televisions, blending consumer accessibility with cutting-edge tech. Today, offerings like the Signature Series headphones and ES amplifiers target discerning listeners seeking refined soundstaging and dynamic range.

Positioned as a mid-to-high-end powerhouse, Sony commands respect among knowledgeable buyers for blending mass-market reliability with premium performance, outpacing many pure audiophile brands in innovation and value. Far from vintage relic or niche boutique, it dominates with forward-thinking engineering, holding strong market share in headphones and streaming ecosystems.
