Overview

The Magnepan 30.7 is a four-panel (two per side), four-way, ribbon/quasi-ribbon line-source loudspeaker that has earned acclaim as the best Magnepan speaker Jonathan Valin (JV) of The Absolute Sound has ever reviewed, and indeed, the finest planar speaker he's experienced to date. This towering flagship model stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best six-figure dynamic speakers in the industry, delivering unparalleled lifelike sound reproduction.

Unmatched Audio Performance The 30.7’s remarkable design is built for a uniquely coherent wave-launch that supports open, free-standing imaging, an expansive soundstage, and astounding resolution. Inner details are handled with a level of nuance that only the finest drivers can achieve, while transient response is instantaneous, lending exceptional realism to voices and acoustic instruments. Notably, the 30.7 eliminates box coloration and diffraction, achieving a level of transparency rarely found even in high-end speakers.

Superior Design for True Sound Reproduction Designed to minimize its presence as a sound source, the 30.7 is renowned for its life-like performance. Its ribbon/quasi-ribbon structure enables it to interact with the listening space in a highly natural way, making it less "speaker" and more like the actual performers in your room. The system’s timbre is exceptionally natural, providing a “you-are-there” sensation that makes it ideal for discerning listeners who value authenticity in their audio.

Award-Winning Value Praised as one of the best ultra-high-end buys in loudspeakers, the 30.7 earned JV’s highest recommendation and was awarded The Absolute Sound's 2017 Overall Product of the Year. For those with ample room space, a high-quality amplifier, and a shared enthusiasm for high-fidelity sound, the 30.7 offers a musical experience that’s hard to surpass.

Can the 30.7 Be Used in Smaller Rooms? The 30.7 is designed with a tall, narrow, floor-to-ceiling line-source ideal in mind, which Magnepan achieves as closely as possible within the limits of real-world materials. However, it’s true that the 30.7 is larger than many conventional speakers, and its bass panels, in particular, require a certain amount of space to function optimally. In smaller rooms, the main acoustic challenge is managing excessive midbass response, which is generally not an issue with deep bass.

To address this, Magnepan has included adjustable midbass control in addition to mid- and high-frequency adjustments, ensuring the 30.7 remains versatile in various acoustic environments. If you can accommodate the visual presence of these large panels, there is no acoustic reason to rule out the 30.7 for a smaller space.

Optimizing Setup for Maximum Performance For ideal setup, Magnepan recommends a specific spatial relationship between the tweeter and bass panels. When positioning the tweeter (whether on the inside or outside), it should always be placed slightly farther from the listener than the bass section. For instance, if the bass panel measures 10 feet 6 inches from the listening position, the tweeter should be at least 10 feet 7 inches away. This slight distance differential optimizes time alignment, helping to maintain a cohesive, balanced soundstage without unwanted phase issues.

In summary, the Magnepan 30.7 is a breakthrough in planar speaker design, delivering stunning clarity, lifelike dynamics, and a sense of space that transports the listener to a new realm of audio realism. If you’re seeking an ultra-high-end speaker that combines award-winning quality with a natural, transparent sound, the 30.7 is a highly recommended choice—one that’s just as impressive in larger rooms as it is adaptable to smaller ones.

About Magnepan

Founded in 1969 in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, by engineer Jim Winey, Magnepan emerged from his dissatisfaction with electrostatic speakers during his time at 3M. Seeking a superior alternative, Winey invented the Magneplanar—a thin-film magnetic driver that rivaled electrostats without their limitations. Bootstrapped with funds from friends and family, the family-owned company has remained American-made, now led by Winey's son Mark from a 50,000-square-foot facility, upholding over five decades of planar innovation.

Magnepan specializes exclusively in planar magnetic loudspeakers, from compact Mini Maggies to towering flagships like the 3.7i. These full-range or hybrid panels eschew traditional cones for quasi-ribbon and true-ribbon drivers, delivering expansive soundstages and lifelike transients. The lineup avoids amplifiers, turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables, focusing solely on speakers that demand high-current amplification to thrive.

Positioned as a high-end niche leader, Magnepan commands reverence among audiophiles for neutral voicing, room-filling dispersion, and value that outpaces competitors dollar-for-dollar. Handcrafted in the USA with domestic parts—"Made in America. Sold in China"—its panels offer unmatched transparency at premium prices, cementing a legacy as the pinnacle of planar magnetic reproduction for discerning listeners worldwide.
