Seller's Description

The Luxman R-117 is a legendary stereo flagship receiver from the late-1980s, widely considered one of the most powerful and best-sounding "monster receivers" ever built. It delivers an authoritative 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms and is highly sought after by audiophiles for its massive headroom and clean, dynamic soundstage. Power Output: 160 Watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo), tested up to 250+ Watts before clippingTotal Harmonic Distortion (THD): 0.03%Dynamic Headroom: Features high-current dual power supplies capable of safely driving demanding speaker loads, including 4-ohm configurations.Phono Input: Supports both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges.Tone Controls: Bass, treble, balance, variable loudness, and a "CD Direct" mode to bypass unnecessary circuitry for the purest signal path.Audio Profile & PerformanceThe R-117 is revered for bridging the gap between vintage warmth and modern sonic clarity. It provides a smooth, liquid midrange and deep bass without sacrificing high-end detail. Because of its immense power reserves, it excels at driving inefficient or large legacy speakers with ease.Luxman's R-117 was released during the CD era, thus it was engineered to perform with a much wider dynamic range. For some reason the engineers also decided to use a massive, triple-shielded, high-energy transformer with ultra-fast recovery rectifier diodes and matched high-current, bipolar transistor pairs in its design. The result is a staggering 700 watts per channel of dynamic power into 2 Ohms! But with more reasonable 4 Ohm speakers it'll still output an impressive 250 watts per channel. Not only does the R-117 handle digital sources, but it crosses over into LP and analog territory exceptionally well. It handles both MM and MC phono cartridges. Even the tuner with a 5-gang varactor, dual gate MOSFET FM front end and automatic hi-blend circuitry is a joy to listen to.CONDITION This unit is in good operating condition and is clean inside and out. All of the lighting and controls are working properly. All the inputs and outputs are working as intended. The phono stage is working and sounds great. The original remote works like it was new. I see small scratch on the Tape 2 input button and minor scratches on the power on/off button. Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The timing is decent if you’re looking for a classic late-80s/early-90s powerhouse, because this is a long-discontinued design and there’s no “newer replacement” that made it obsolete. At US$800, it lands below the US$1,107 median but above the US$467 25th percentile, so it reads as fair-to-good value rather than a steal.

What makes it worth a look is the reputation: these Luxman “monster” integrateds are loved for big, authoritative drive, generous current delivery, and a smooth-but-not-soft presentation that works well with demanding speakers. The original remote is a nice plus, and if the unit is clean and fully functional, the combo of classic build quality and strong owner appeal makes this a sensible buy.

About Luxman

Luxman traces its origins to 1925 in Osaka, Japan, when brothers T. Hayakawa and K. Yoshikawa launched a radio equipment division within their Kinsuido picture frame import business, coinciding with Japan's inaugural radio broadcast. Initially importing components, the company soon pivoted to in-house manufacturing of transformers and switches, birthing the Luxman brand and establishing it as one of Japan's oldest electronic component makers. This heritage of precision engineering has endured through ownership shifts, including stints with Alpine and Samsung, before returning to Japanese hands in the early 2000s under dedicated Luxman Corporation.

The brand specializes in luxury high-end audio components, with a storied emphasis on amplifiers—both integrated and power models—preamplifiers, and receivers renowned for their warm, detailed sound. Luxman also produces turntables, CD players, tape decks, and speakers, alongside modern digital offerings like DACs, all handcrafted in Japan with custom parts and dual-mono designs for ultimate fidelity.

Positioned firmly in the high-end market, Luxman commands respect among discerning audiophiles for its timeless aesthetics, uncompromising build quality, and sonic refinement that bridges vintage warmth with cutting-edge performance. Classics like the 1970s CL-32 preamp and 1980s L-507 integrated amplifier fuel its collector appeal, while contemporary lines reaffirm its status as a boutique benchmark for those seeking "Ultimate Fidelity since 1925."
