Seller's Description

Sansui AU-555A Integrated Amplifier (Solid State) Up for sale is a Sansui AU-555A, one of the legendary early-70s amplifiers from Sansui’s sought-after AU series. Known for its warm, detailed sound and beautiful build quality, this unit is a favourite among vintage audio enthusiasts and vinyl lovers. And it looks great! Pick up much preferred, from Suffolk Park, right near Byron Bay. Note: Bring your speakers to listen / test 😀 I only have one functioning speaker to plug into it right now, which is lovely but quite small.   - 20 watts per channel @ 8 ohms (don’t let the numbers fool you—plenty

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The timing matters a little because this is a classic early-’70s Sansui integrated, so value is driven more by condition and originality than by age alone; at A$700, it sits clearly below the A$916 25th percentile and well under the A$976 median for recent comparable AUD listings, which makes it a strong buy rather than a stretch. In a market where clean vintage Sansui gear often carries a loyal following, that’s a decent entry point if it’s complete and cosmetically honest.

What makes it worth chasing is the usual Sansui appeal: smooth, musical presentation, solid phono capability, and a reputation for being very satisfying with efficient speakers. If it’s been serviced and the controls are quiet, the upside is real; just make sure the seller can speak to power-up behavior, channel balance, and whether any work has been done, because age-related service needs are the main variable on these.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Sansui

Sansui, a pioneering Japanese audio brand, traces its origins to 1947 when it was founded in Tokyo by brothers Sakurai and Shunichi Yamamoto. Emerging from post-war Japan, the company quickly established itself as an innovator in consumer electronics, leveraging precision engineering to craft components that rivaled Western counterparts. Its heritage is rooted in the golden era of hi-fi, where Sansui's commitment to sonic purity helped define Japan's rise as a global audio powerhouse.

The brand excelled in a broad spectrum of hi-fi categories, with particular renown for its integrated amplifiers, receivers, and tuners that delivered warm, dynamic sound. Sansui also produced acclaimed speakers, turntables, cassette decks, and later digital converters, emphasizing robust build quality and innovative features like direct-coupled circuitry for low distortion. These products catered to audiophiles seeking balanced performance across analog and early digital domains.

Today, Sansui holds a cherished position in the vintage collector market, revered for its mid-to-high-end gear from the 1970s and 1980s—icons like the AU-series amps remain sought after for their musicality and reliability. While no longer a frontline manufacturer, its legacy endures among discerning buyers restoring classics or hunting timeless performers, blending nostalgia with enduring value.
