Thiel Audio emerged in 1976 from a Lexington, Kentucky garage, founded by university friends Jim Thiel, his brother Tom Thiel, and Kathy Gornik. With $25,000 borrowed from family and friends, they bootstrapped a high-performance loudspeaker company rooted in Jim Thiel's innovative engineering. The trio expanded into a 35,000-square-foot facility, exporting to over 30 countries and building a legacy of meticulous craftsmanship until operations ceased in 2018 following financial challenges and leadership changes after Jim's 2009 passing.

The brand focused exclusively on loudspeakers, pioneering time- and phase-coherent designs through Jim Thiel's Coherent Source technology. Signature sloped baffles ensured driver time alignment, paired with first-order crossovers, custom drivers, and furniture-grade cabinets. Iconic models like the CS2.4, CS3.7, and early CS01 spanned floorstanders, bookshelves, on-wall/in-wall options, and subwoofers for stereo, home theater, and whole-home audio, emphasizing realistic sound reproduction over gimmicks.

Thiel occupied a distinctive mid-tier high-end niche, delivering audiophile-grade performance—rivaling pricier exotica—at accessible prices for discerning listeners. Revered by enthusiasts for emotional, lifelike playback, its speakers remain collector favorites on the used market, though new production ended in 2018, cementing Thiel as a vintage icon of American hi-fi ingenuity.
