Tungsol

Tung-Sol is a heritage American name that began in Newark, New Jersey, in 1907 as Tung-Sol Lamp Works Inc.; early records and brand histories trace it to founder Harvey W. Harper, though some sources note an even earlier small-business precursor in New York. The company’s original business was automotive lighting and bulbs, and its name combined “tungsten” with the Latin sol for sun.

For hi-fi buyers, Tung-Sol is chiefly associated with vacuum tubes, not modern loudspeakers, turntables, DACs, or headphones. Its best-known audio legacy is the 6550 power tube, introduced in the 1950s, along with other preamp and power tubes that have become staples in guitar amplifiers and tube hi-fi systems. Today, the Tung-Sol name is owned by New Sensor Corporation, and current production is made in Russia.

In the market, Tung-Sol sits in a niche, enthusiast, and vintage-leaning position rather than a broad consumer-audio one.
