Seller's Description

ME Sound (Australia) 850 Power Amplifier Dismantling my current system to allow for something new. Looking to sell my Power/Pre amp Setup being ME850 Power Amp and ME25 Pre-Amp.    This ME850 power amp is currently taming a power hungry pair of Infinity Kappa 9s. Great amp and not skipped a beat in powering current hungry speakers. Bought second hand approx 3 years ago when I moved states with minimal use since then. Unfortunately, life has been a whirlwind after moving states and most gear is sitting packed up and unused which is not the life they deserve.  Condition: Very Good Payment Method

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Ambitious asking price at AUD 2,000 for a used ME Sound Australia 850 pair—it's pushing 13% above the 75th percentile of recent comps (AUD 1,505–1,779 median), where clean examples have traded locally. Without condition specifics, this feels optimistic for the used market, especially given the model's age; typical turns hover in that sub-AUD 1,800 band for solid units.

Buyers, verify driver integrity first—woofers on these 850s can foam-rot over time, leading to muddled bass. Check for original grilles, spikes, and serial-matched pairs; missing bits or rebuild history should knock 10-20% off. Test crossovers for haze-free highs too.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About ME Sound

ME Sound emerged from Australia in 1976, founded by Peter Stein, an engineer passionate about high-fidelity amplification. Stein established the brand in the vibrant local hi-fi scene, crafting components that prioritized power and precision during the golden era of analog audio. Though Stein passed away in 2022, his legacy endures through a dedicated following that values the brand's roots in hands-on Australian manufacturing.

The company specialized in high-current power amplifiers, with iconic models like the ME850, ME1400, and ME1500 standing out for their robust delivery and dynamic headroom. These were often paired with preamplifiers in complete systems, appealing to enthusiasts seeking uncolored, authoritative sound. ME Sound focused narrowly on amplification rather than diversifying into speakers, DACs, or headphones, emphasizing solid-state designs built for longevity.

Positioned as a niche boutique in the vintage hi-fi market, ME Sound commands respect among collectors for its mid-tier pricing and superior second-hand value. The original run ceased around 2003 amid liquidation, sparking rumors of revival, though no verified new production has materialized. Today, it thrives in the used arena, where well-preserved units rival contemporaries for sheer drive and musicality.
