Our Thoughts RADAR AI

McIntosh’s MC240 stands as a classic tube stereo amplifier from the golden era of hi-fi, prized for its warm, musical sound. The asking price of US$4,875 is ambitious, sitting well above the 75th percentile of US$3,600 and the median of US$3,600 from your recent comparable listings. While external data suggests US$3,500 is fair for a recapped unit, this listing exceeds that typical range significantly, making it a tough buy unless the condition is exceptional or includes rare accessories.

The MC240 delivers 40 watts per channel with legendary McIntosh reliability and a rich, full-bodied tone that many audiophiles adore. Its 1960s origins, original-owner pedigree, and potential for vintage charm add meaningful upside for collectors. If this unit is fully recapped, has quality tubes, and includes original manuals or cables, it could justify the higher price as a rare find. However, without verified restoration or premium condition, the price remains steep compared to the market, so buyers should scrutinize the amp’s history before committing.

About McIntosh

McIntosh Laboratory, founded in 1949 in the United States by Frank H. McIntosh and Gordon Gow, embodies a storied heritage of American audio innovation. Originally based in Silver Spring, Maryland, before relocating to Binghamton, New York, where products are still handcrafted today, the brand emerged from a commitment to superior sound reproduction. From powering President Lyndon Johnson's inauguration to the Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound at Woodstock, McIntosh has shaped pivotal moments in music history and pop culture, earning its place as a cultural icon.

The company specializes in a comprehensive lineup of high-fidelity components, including renowned amplifiers—particularly its revered tube models for their warm, enveloping sound—along with solid-state power amps, stereo tuners, loudspeakers, turntables, music streamers, processors, and digital-to-analog converters.
