The Bose 901 is notable for its unusual Direct/Reflecting design: eight of its nine drivers fire toward the room boundaries, creating a broad, spacious presentation rather than conventional pinpoint imaging. At €500, this is a strong deal—below the €494 25th-percentile comparable and well under the €609 median, making it one of the better-priced examples in the current used market.
They remain appealing for listeners who enjoy an enveloping, lively sound and have a room that can provide suitable wall reflections. The dedicated active equalizer is essential to getting the intended tonal balance, so confirm it is included and working; also verify that all drivers in both cabinets produce sound. If those basics check out, €500 for a good-condition pair is a buying opportunity rather than merely a fair price.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Bose Corporation traces its roots to 1964, when MIT professor Amar Gopal Bose founded the company in Natick, Massachusetts, after growing disillusioned with the poor performance of a high-end stereo system he purchased as a graduate student. Driven by a passion for replicating the immersive qualities of live music through rigorous acoustic research, Bose launched the venture with initial contracts for the U.S. military and NASA, emphasizing innovative speaker designs that prioritized indirect, reverberant sound over direct radiation. This American heritage, rooted in psychoacoustics and engineering excellence, has defined the brand's pursuit of "Better Sound Through Research."
Bose excels in consumer and professional audio categories, renowned for its home audio systems, premium speakers like the iconic 901 Series, and pioneering noise-canceling headphones first prototyped in the 1980s for pilots. The lineup extends to vehicle sound systems, portable Bluetooth speakers, and professional installations, but steers clear of niche hi-fi components such as amplifiers, turntables, DACs, or cables, focusing instead on integrated, user-friendly solutions that blend advanced signal processing with spatial audio reproduction.
Positioned as a premium mid-tier powerhouse in the global market, Bose commands widespread appeal among discerning buyers seeking accessible high-performance audio without audiophile esoterica. Its reputation for innovation and reliability has built a loyal following, though purists occasionally critique its measured sound signature, cementing Bose as a dominant force in mainstream hi-fi rather than high-end boutique or vintage realms.
