Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Buchardt S400 MKIIs punch way above their weight with that massive passive radiator delivering controlled bass from a compact cabinet, plus a refined crossover for an airy, engaging soundstage that rivals pricier stands like KEF R3s.

At AUD3,800 for a special colour, it's ambitious—recent used MKIIs in excellent shape have moved for AUD2,200-2,800, with one barely four months old fetching AUD2,400 equivalent; Signature Editions push higher but not quite this premium without provenance. Check for the transferable 5-year warranty validity, original crossover upgrades (MKI retrofits aren't true MKII), and full accessories like grilles, covers, and box—sun-fading on radiators or woofer cone issues crop up in larger rooms. Verify seller feedback too.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Buchardt

Buchardt Audio traces its roots to Denmark, where founder Mads Buchardt and his childhood friend Kasper began developing speaker designs in 2008 under the informal banner of Rabu Acoustics, initially selling components like drivers and crossover parts. The company officially launched in 2013 with the S200 and S300 models, leveraging advanced measurement technology—including a pioneering robot that enabled precise waveguide engineering for the groundbreaking S400, the world's first hi-fi speaker designed with such tools.

The brand focuses exclusively on high-performance speakers, offering both passive and active models in bookshelf and standmount categories, such as the acclaimed S400 Mk3 and E50. Production occurs at the ISO-certified Hansong factory in Nanjing, China—a Danish-Chinese partnership emphasizing quality—allowing Buchardt to handcraft audiophile-grade units without venturing into amplifiers, DACs, headphones, or other categories.

Buchardt holds a strong position in the high-end market as a niche boutique innovator, delivering Scandinavian design and "big sound" from compact form factors at accessible prices by skipping traditional dealers. Renowned among audiophiles for precision engineering and value, it redefines expectations for performance-driven hi-fi.
