Offered is „A1“ by Spendor as exhibit from the category „Bookshelf Speaker“ on audio-markt.de - the online market place for high-end. The advert with the number 4600569872 ends on 24.12.2026 at 13:38 o'clock.
The A1 dates from Spendor’s original A-Line generation, but its compact, still-current design has not suddenly become obsolete. At €1,300, however, this is ambitious rather than a bargain: recent comparable asking prices centre on €976, with the 75th percentile at €1,073, so this sits well above the normal used-market band. I’d want exceptional provenance or extras to justify it.
The appeal is real. These are beautifully coherent, easy-to-place sealed standmounts, with unusually natural midrange, precise imaging and a smooth, informative treble. The EP77 mid/bass driver gives bass good control and texture, though deep low-end weight is limited and their roughly 84 dB sensitivity rewards a capable amplifier. In genuinely clean condition they remain a worthwhile speaker, but at €1,300 the buyer should negotiate toward the market median—or wait for a better-priced pair.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Spendor, a quintessential British hi-fi brand, traces its origins to the late 1960s when BBC sound engineer Spencer Hughes and his wife Dorothy founded the company in Sussex, England—the name itself a clever fusion of "Spen" and "Dor." Drawing on Spencer's expertise alongside co-designer Dudley Harwood, they pioneered the BC1 loudspeaker in 1969, featuring the world's first commercial 8-inch plastic cone driver made from innovative Bextrene material. This breakthrough quickly established Spendor as the monitor of choice for broadcasters, recording studios, and discerning listeners worldwide, setting a benchmark for transparent, natural sound.
The brand focuses exclusively on loudspeakers, designing, engineering, and hand-building every driver, crossover, and cabinet in their Sussex facility. Their lineup spans the accessible A series for mainstream buyers, the premium D series for high-end performance, and the Classic line, which revives iconic designs like the BC1 with modern polymer and Kevlar cones, cast-magnesium chassis, and advanced motor systems. Spendor eschews amplifiers, turntables, or headphones, prioritizing pure speaker innovation rooted in BBC-honed precision.
Today, under owner Philip Swift since 2000, Spendor holds a revered position as a high-end, heritage British marque, blending vintage collector appeal with contemporary excellence. Renowned among audiophiles and professionals for smooth, low-distortion imaging and musicality, it remains a global reference standard, entirely made in the UK to captivate serious hi-fi enthusiasts.
