At US$5,099, this is a strong deal, sitting below the recent comparable range: the 25th-percentile asking price is US$5,662, versus a US$6,226 median and US$6,789 75th percentile. Assuming it is complete and working properly, the price looks like a genuine buying opportunity.
The LS 99 is a serious, fully balanced Class A tube preamp with transformer-coupled inputs and outputs, tube rectification, an external power supply, and useful RCA/XLR connectivity. Its design borrows heavily from ModWright’s LS 300 flagship, delivering a spacious, harmonically rich presentation without giving up detail or image precision. The included remote, power supply, umbilical, and correct 6922/6DJ8 and 5AR4-type tubes matter, so confirm those are present; otherwise, this is priced attractively enough to pursue.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
ModWright Instruments is an American hi-fi brand founded in 2000 by Dan Wright, who remains the company’s founder and chief designer. The company is based in Amboy, Washington, and began as a modification outfit for digital audio products before evolving into a full component manufacturer.
Today, ModWright is best known for high-end tube and hybrid electronics, especially preamplifiers, phono stages, power amplifiers, headphone amplifiers, and DACs. Its product line also includes some solid-state amplification, but the brand’s identity is rooted in analog-friendly, meticulously voiced components rather than loudspeakers, turntables, or accessories.
In the market, ModWright sits firmly in the high-end, niche-boutique segment. Its reputation is built on handcrafted build quality, a strong tube-audio aesthetic, and a “musical” presentation that appeals to experienced listeners looking for refinement and character rather than mass-market convenience.
