Theta Cobalt 307 DAC Sad to let this go as it's been one of the most enjoyable DACs I've owned but the gear purchase addiction is itching again. Designed by Mike Moffat of Schiit and it was the budget baby of Theta. It's better than the Schiit Modi 3 which I also have. I find the bass is meatier and there is more texture/depth compared to the budget Schiit. This is a hybrid Multi-bit/Delta Sigma Burr Brown DAC chip. Condition unknown makes the price easy to like, because at A$280 this sits well below the typical used range I’d expect for a Theta Cobalt 307, which commonly shows up around the equivalent of roughly A$700 plus in overseas used listings. That makes this look like a strong deal if it powers up cleanly and hasn’t been messed with.
What keeps it interesting is the unit itself: Theta’s Cobalt 307 is a respected older digital processor/DAC, known for a serious 18-bit hybrid DAC stage, 8x oversampling, and strong measured performance for its era. It’s a good buy if you want a vintage Theta sound and the seller can confirm functional outputs, original power supply, and any included remote or accessories; at this price, those extras would be a nice bonus rather than a requirement.
