Theta Cobalt 307 DAC Sad to let this go as it's been one of the most enjoyable DACs I've owned but the gear purchase addiction is itching again. Designed by Mike Moffat of Schiit and it was the budget baby of Theta. It's better than the Schiit Modi 3 which I also have. I find the bass is meatier and there is more texture/depth compared to the budget Schiit. This is a hybrid Multi-bit/Delta Sigma Burr Brown DAC chip. At A$310, this is well below the Cobalt 307’s original A$900-or-so launch price once you account for its $599 1993 MSRP, so it reads as a strong value if it’s working properly. Even allowing for age and the fact that this is a vintage piece, that’s a very approachable entry point for a Theta pre/DAC-grade component.
The appeal here is straightforward: Theta was respected for a big, dynamic, clean presentation, and the 307 was praised for sounding gutsy and powerful with good tonal balance. For a buyer, the upside is getting a serious-sounding older piece with real pedigree at low risk if the listing is complete and the unit is healthy. I’d mainly want confirmation of all inputs/outputs working, smooth volume control, and no channel imbalance or crackly switches; at this price, it’s a worthwhile pickup rather than a cautionary buy.
