This unit is in nice, clean physical condition and is fully working. Includes removable rack mount ears. Photos are of actual player.
Unknown condition at US$200 puts this a bit above the recent US$169 median and past the US$184 75th percentile, so it reads as a mild premium rather than a standout deal. It’s not crazy money for a Tascam combo deck, but I’d want either a clean, fully tested unit or included extras to justify the ask; otherwise there’s room to negotiate.
The CD-A500 is appealing because it gives you both cassette and CD in one box, which is genuinely convenient for a tape-era setup or a compact secondary rig. Tascam gear in this class is usually valued for practical build and straightforward operation, but with older combo decks the real buyer value is in verified transport health, stable playback, and clean recording/looping behavior.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Tascam is a Japanese professional-audio brand whose roots trace back to TEAC, founded in 1953 by the Tani brothers. The TASCAM name emerged in the late 1960s as TEAC Audio Systems Corporation, and it was formally established in 1971 as TEAC’s U.S. distribution and development arm for recorder products aimed at musicians and studios.
The brand is best known for recorders, mixers, field recorders, multitrack production units, audio interfaces, and related studio gear. Its catalogue has historically centered on practical recording tools rather than lifestyle hi-fi, with strong associations to cassette Portastudios, reel-to-reel machines, and compact pro-audio components.
In the market, Tascam sits in the pro-audio and project-studio space rather than the high-end audiophile tier. Its reputation is built on utility, durability, and value, and some vintage models have become collector favorites, but the brand is not typically positioned as a boutique or luxury hi-fi name.
