Seller's Description

The Spendor Classic 2/3 is a larger-format two-way loudspeaker designed to deliver a natural, engaging musical experience. Built around a substantial 22 cm mid/bass driver and a well-matched soft-dome tweeter, it offers impressive scale and depth while retaining a smooth mid-band and refined treble. Its cabinet uses enhanced structural damping and elastomer panel treatment, delivering openness, punch and subtle dynamics without fatigue. With a nominal sensitivity of 88 dB and an 8 Ω nominal impedance, it is amenable to a broad range of amplifiers and is at home in serious music-listening systems where tone, timing and texture matter.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The Spendor Classic 2/3 is a respected British standmount known for its natural tonal balance and musicality, placing it firmly in the enthusiast tier. At A$5,800, the asking price sits near the upper end of the typical used market, where pairs often trade between A$3,500 and A$5,200, making this listing ambitious rather than a bargain. While new pairs range from A$6,500 to A$9,600, the used premium here is modest unless the condition is pristine or accessories are included.

This model earns its reputation for delivering a warm, coherent sound with excellent midrange clarity, ideal for vocals and small rooms. If the speakers are in original-owner condition with intact grilles and no cabinet wear, the price becomes justifiable for buyers seeking a proven, high-fidelity option. The upside lies in their rarity as a classic design and their ability to pair well with both vintage and modern amplifiers. Unless there are visible damage or missing components, this is a worthwhile buy for those prioritizing sound quality over saving a few hundred dollars.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Spendor

Spendor, a quintessential British hi-fi brand, traces its origins to the late 1960s when BBC sound engineer Spencer Hughes and his wife Dorothy founded the company in Sussex, England—the name itself a clever fusion of "Spen" and "Dor." Drawing on Spencer's expertise alongside co-designer Dudley Harwood, they pioneered the BC1 loudspeaker in 1969, featuring the world's first commercial 8-inch plastic cone driver made from innovative Bextrene material. This breakthrough quickly established Spendor as the monitor of choice for broadcasters, recording studios, and discerning listeners worldwide, setting a benchmark for transparent, natural sound.

The brand focuses exclusively on loudspeakers, designing, engineering, and hand-building every driver, crossover, and cabinet in their Sussex facility. Their lineup spans the accessible A series for mainstream buyers, the premium D series for high-end performance, and the Classic line, which revives iconic designs like the BC1 with modern polymer and Kevlar cones, cast-magnesium chassis, and advanced motor systems. Spendor eschews amplifiers, turntables, or headphones, prioritizing pure speaker innovation rooted in BBC-honed precision.

Today, under owner Philip Swift since 2000, Spendor holds a revered position as a high-end, heritage British marque, blending vintage collector appeal with contemporary excellence. Renowned among audiophiles and professionals for smooth, low-distortion imaging and musicality, it remains a global reference standard, entirely made in the UK to captivate serious hi-fi enthusiasts.
