Seller's Description

Linn LP12 Sondek Turntable and Tonearm Package This is a regretful offer of my vintage LP12. Purchased by me from Audio Connection approx. 7yrs ago, I believe as a trade-in from the original owner. Serial number is 12218 which places it somewhere between 1974-77 (pre Cirkus)   Since I've owned her I've polished the platter and oiled the original Afromosia plinth and it was thoroughly serviced by Classic Hifi in Newtown in December 2024 where the following work was done at approx $900 cost: new powercord and QED interconnects new baseboard change bearing oil and adjust suspension replacement be

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Timing matters here because the LP12 is an older design that has been iterated rather than replaced, so you’re buying into a long-lived ecosystem rather than chasing the newest version. At A$2,500, this sits well below your A$3,527 25th percentile and far under the A$4,515 median, so it reads as a strong buy in the current AUD market.

What makes it worth chasing is the deck’s reputation for pace, timing, and upgradeability; even a basic LP12 tends to have real musical pull, and a clean example can be a great platform for future improvements. The upside is best if it includes a decent arm, cartridge, and recent service history, because those details can swing value a lot on this model. With condition listed as unknown, I’d want to confirm the suspension, bearing, motor health, and any service records before committing.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Linn

Linn Products: Brand Overview

Linn Products was founded in 1973 by Scottish engineer Ivor Tiefenbrun in Glasgow as a vehicle to manufacture the Sondek LP12 turntable, which would become the company's most iconic product and a cornerstone of high-fidelity audio. The brand emerged during the golden era of British hi-fi with a revolutionary "source first" philosophy—challenging the prevailing industry belief that loudspeakers mattered most by demonstrating that superior sound quality begins with the audio source. This foundational principle has guided the company's engineering ethos for over five decades.

Linn's product portfolio spans the complete hi-fi chain, from turntables and tonearms to preamplifiers, power amplifiers, and loudspeakers. The company introduced the world's first microprocessor-controlled preamplifier and power amplifier in 1985 (the LK1 and LK2), establishing itself as an electronics specialist. From 2007 onward, Linn pivoted toward digital music streaming, becoming an early adopter of network-based audio playback supporting studio master-quality recordings at 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, and discontinued CD player production in 2009 to focus on this strategic direction.

Linn occupies the high-end segment of the audio market, commanding respect among discerning audiophiles and collectors for its uncompromising engineering approach and longevity. The brand's reputation rests on meticulous product design, acoustic isolation principles, and a commitment to eliminating weak links in the signal chain—a philosophy that has made Linn one of the most influential manufacturers in hi-fi history and a benchmark for quality-focused audio engineering.
