Eico

Eico, an acronym for Electronic Instrument Company, was founded in 1945 in New York City by Harry Ashley, a radio repair business owner who established the brand to manufacture electronic test equipment in kit form. The company quickly became a pillar of the American hobbyist electronics market, standing alongside Heathkit and Knight-Kits as a major producer of DIY electronics during the postwar boom.

While initially known for test instruments, Eico expanded into consumer high-fidelity audio, producing affordable amplifiers, receivers, tuners, speakers, and notably reel-to-reel tape decks from the early 1950s through the early 1970s. Their products emphasized solid mechanical reliability and educational value, offering both kit versions for hobbyists to assemble and ready-built units for budget-conscious consumers, though they were never positioned as high-end audiophile machines.

Eico’s market position was firmly mid-tier and vintage-collector focused, appealing to electronics enthusiasts and budget buyers rather than the luxury segment. The company exited the audio business entirely by the late 1970s as cassette technology and Japanese hi-fi systems dominated the market, leaving Eico as a respected name among vintage audio collectors and tube amplifier enthusiasts who value its durable, affordable, and historically significant gear.
