Seller's Description

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At €350, this Tascam Portastudio 488 (sold for parts) sits exactly at the median of the recent EUR market, making it a fair price for a unit intended for repair or parts harvesting, though it is not a bargain given the 25th percentile sits at €277. When new, the 488 MkII launched at £999 (roughly €1,850 in today’s money), so even a parts-unit at €350 represents solid value compared to its original cost.

The 488 remains a cult favorite for its robust 12-input mixer with 3-band EQ, dbx noise reduction, and manual/auto punch-in, offering genuine 8-track cassette multitracking that still delivers warm, characterful results. If you’re handy with soldering or need heads, caps, or a mixer board, this listing offers meaningful upside: the unit’s pedigree and included accessories (if any) make it a worthwhile buy for a dedicated enthusiast willing to restore or repurpose it.

About Tascam

Tascam is a Japanese professional-audio brand whose roots trace back to TEAC, founded in 1953 by the Tani brothers. The TASCAM name emerged in the late 1960s as TEAC Audio Systems Corporation, and it was formally established in 1971 as TEAC’s U.S. distribution and development arm for recorder products aimed at musicians and studios.

The brand is best known for recorders, mixers, field recorders, multitrack production units, audio interfaces, and related studio gear. Its catalogue has historically centered on practical recording tools rather than lifestyle hi-fi, with strong associations to cassette Portastudios, reel-to-reel machines, and compact pro-audio components.

In the market, Tascam sits in the pro-audio and project-studio space rather than the high-end audiophile tier. Its reputation is built on utility, durability, and value, and some vintage models have become collector favorites, but the brand is not typically positioned as a boutique or luxury hi-fi name.
