The N22 Gen 1’s age matters mainly because it predates the newer version with Bluetooth and USB-C audio, but it remains a capable compact desktop amp. At US$90, this is a fair-to-good buy: it sits above the US$70 median but comfortably below the US$119 75th percentile, and remains within the normal range rather than looking overpriced.
Its appeal is the tidy 22-watt-per-channel Class D output, useful headphone stage, dual analog inputs, solid binding posts, and variable preamp output for a subwoofer or external amplifier. It is particularly well suited to efficient nearfield speakers and small listening spaces, with a compact, fanless design that runs quietly. Check that the power cord and stand are included, and confirm the volume control, headphone output, and both inputs work; otherwise, US$90 is a sensible price for a clean example.

Founded in 2005 in Austin, Texas, Audioengine emerged from the vision of co-founders Brady and Dave, audio industry veterans with decades of experience at Harman, Apple, Gibson Guitars, and Alesis. Frustrated by the complexity and cost of high-quality sound, they launched the original A5 powered speakers that year, pioneering compact systems for direct connection to computers, iPods, and TVs without extra gear. This Texas-based independent company has since upheld a mission to craft hand-tuned products that deliver authentic, premium audio straight out of the box.
Audioengine specializes in powered home music systems, including desktop and bookshelf speakers like the iconic A2 and A5 series, alongside amplifiers, DACs, wireless streamers, turntable accessories, and cables. Their all-in-one designs emphasize simplicity, with built-in amplification, multiple inputs, and high-resolution wireless options for seamless integration across devices from computers to TVs and phones. Handcrafted cabinets house custom woofers and tweeters, prioritizing real-world listening over studio exclusivity.
Positioned as a mid-tier leader in accessible hi-fi, Audioengine earns praise for audiophile-grade performance at reasonable prices, bridging casual listeners and enthusiasts. Neither ultra-high-end nor vintage niche, it dominates the powered speaker market with reliable, no-fuss systems that outperform expectations without breaking the bank, fostering daily music immersion for home, office, or desktop setups.
