Seller's Description

ME Sound (Australia) 1400 Power Amplifier I have for sale my ME1400 stereo amplifier that I have had since 2002 when I bought it used from Trevor Wilson at Rage Audio. This was personally bench tested at the time by Peter Stein and has served me very well for all these years. This was one of the first 10 built and is built like a tank. I did have Trevor rebias it once and in 2010 I had the fascia changed as it had the old perspex front with the bulging power button. Winovate had a one of a kind gold fascia that was specifically made for someone who could not afford it, and a black on/off switc

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Relative to the recent comparables, this is far above market: A$6,000 sits well over the 75th percentile of A$1,686, against a median of A$1,621 and a 25th percentile of A$1,506. On those numbers alone, it looks ambitious rather than fair, unless there’s something exceptional in the condition, provenance, or included extras that isn’t stated.

That said, the 1400 is the sort of ME Sound amp buyers chase for its serious output, grip, and no-nonsense pro-audio build, so a clean, fully working example can still be worth pursuing. The upside here is only if the unit is unusually pristine, recently serviced, or bundled with original packaging/manuals; otherwise, at A$6,000, I’d want hard evidence of rarity or a standout restoration to justify the ask.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About ME Sound

ME Sound emerged from Australia in 1976, founded by Peter Stein, an engineer passionate about high-fidelity amplification. Stein established the brand in the vibrant local hi-fi scene, crafting components that prioritized power and precision during the golden era of analog audio. Though Stein passed away in 2022, his legacy endures through a dedicated following that values the brand's roots in hands-on Australian manufacturing.

The company specialized in high-current power amplifiers, with iconic models like the ME850, ME1400, and ME1500 standing out for their robust delivery and dynamic headroom. These were often paired with preamplifiers in complete systems, appealing to enthusiasts seeking uncolored, authoritative sound. ME Sound focused narrowly on amplification rather than diversifying into speakers, DACs, or headphones, emphasizing solid-state designs built for longevity.

Positioned as a niche boutique in the vintage hi-fi market, ME Sound commands respect among collectors for its mid-tier pricing and superior second-hand value. The original run ceased around 2003 amid liquidation, sparking rumors of revival, though no verified new production has materialized. Today, it thrives in the used arena, where well-preserved units rival contemporaries for sheer drive and musicality.
