Hegel Music Systems traces its roots to 1988 in Norway, when engineering student Bent Holter at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim undertook a thesis project to redesign transistor amplifiers, eliminating distortion inherent in traditional hi-fi designs. Drawing from his time in the rock band The Hegel Band, Holter named his venture accordingly and secured funding from telecom giant Telenor to refine his innovations. Patented SoundEngine technology emerged in the early 1990s, followed by the company's first DAC in 1994 and CD player in 1996, marking a period of steady growth amid economic challenges where Hegel defiantly invested in new talent rather than cutting costs.
