At €2,195, the obvious alternative is a newer pair of small-diaphragm condensers, but this sits well beyond the normal used market: the €895 median and €1,346 75th percentile make it an ambitious ask, not a bargain. It would need unusually complete accessories, exceptional condition, or strong provenance to justify the premium.
The KM 131 remains a desirable modular Neumann: its matched omnidirectional capsules offer natural, extended response and excellent stereo consistency, particularly for room, acoustic instruments, percussion, and ambient work. The pair’s real appeal is the classic KM 100-series character and future capsule flexibility. Before paying this much, confirm both microphones match closely, pass phantom-power testing quietly, and include the correct mounts, windscreens, cases, and any original modular accessories; otherwise, negotiation toward the market range is sensible.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Neumann traces its origins to Berlin, Germany, where Georg Neumann and Erich Rickmann founded the company in 1928. Initially focused on pioneering condenser microphones, such as the groundbreaking CMV 3—nicknamed "The Bottle"—Neumann quickly established itself as an innovator amid the early days of professional audio. Despite wartime disruptions that split production and led to the creation of Microtech Gefell, Georg Neumann rebuilt in post-war Berlin, launching the iconic U 47 tube-condenser microphone, which solidified the brand's legacy in recording history.
The brand specializes in professional recording equipment, renowned for its high-end condenser microphones like the U 47, U 67, and U 87, which dominate studios worldwide. Beyond mics, Neumann produces studio monitors, headphones, preamplifiers, audio interfaces such as the recent MT 48, and historically excelled in cutting lathes for mastering. This pro-audio emphasis sets it apart from consumer hi-fi categories like amplifiers, turntables, or cables.
Neumann commands an elite position in the market as the gold standard for professional recording, embodying precision engineering and unmatched fidelity prized by engineers and producers. Its products grace legendary sessions, blending vintage reverence with modern reliability, making it essential for discerning hi-fi enthusiasts seeking studio-grade accuracy rather than mid-tier or boutique consumer gear.
