New, the U 87 Ai Stereo Set is around €6,690–€6,799, so €4,350 used is a substantial saving rather than an inflated ask. Against 58 comparable used listings, it sits well above the €920 median and €1,493 75th percentile, but those figures may mix single microphones and incomplete sets; for a complete stereo pair, the price looks reasonable rather than cheap.
This is a serious recording tool: two matched U 87 Ai microphones offer the familiar three polar patterns, broad 20 Hz–20 kHz response, and the tonal consistency that makes them dependable on vocals, acoustic instruments, and stereo room work. The set should include both EA 87 shock mounts, dust covers, and the aluminium case. At this price, confirm both microphones are the actual Ai versions, test every pattern and pad/filter switch, and verify matching serials or service history.

Neumann traces its origins to Berlin, Germany, where Georg Neumann and Erich Rickmann founded the company in 1928. Initially focused on pioneering condenser microphones, such as the groundbreaking CMV 3—nicknamed "The Bottle"—Neumann quickly established itself as an innovator amid the early days of professional audio. Despite wartime disruptions that split production and led to the creation of Microtech Gefell, Georg Neumann rebuilt in post-war Berlin, launching the iconic U 47 tube-condenser microphone, which solidified the brand's legacy in recording history.
The brand specializes in professional recording equipment, renowned for its high-end condenser microphones like the U 47, U 67, and U 87, which dominate studios worldwide. Beyond mics, Neumann produces studio monitors, headphones, preamplifiers, audio interfaces such as the recent MT 48, and historically excelled in cutting lathes for mastering. This pro-audio emphasis sets it apart from consumer hi-fi categories like amplifiers, turntables, or cables.
Neumann commands an elite position in the market as the gold standard for professional recording, embodying precision engineering and unmatched fidelity prized by engineers and producers. Its products grace legendary sessions, blending vintage reverence with modern reliability, making it essential for discerning hi-fi enthusiasts seeking studio-grade accuracy rather than mid-tier or boutique consumer gear.
