New pricing is around €3,149, so €2,700 is a sensible saving rather than a bargain. It sits well above the 57-listing median of €909 and the €1,451 75th percentile, making it an ambitious used asking price even in excellent condition.
That said, the U 87 Ai remains a serious studio reference: exceptionally quiet, versatile, and useful across vocals, instruments, and roomier sources thanks to its omni, cardioid, and figure-eight patterns, plus pad and low-cut switches. The EA 87 shock mount and wooden case are the correct accessories and help preserve resale value. At €2,700, it becomes attractive only with excellent provenance, clean capsules and grille, a fully functional pattern selector, and ideally original purchase documentation; otherwise, negotiation toward the upper end of typical market territory would be reasonable.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Neumann traces its origins to Berlin, Germany, where Georg Neumann and Erich Rickmann founded the company in 1928. Initially focused on pioneering condenser microphones, such as the groundbreaking CMV 3—nicknamed "The Bottle"—Neumann quickly established itself as an innovator amid the early days of professional audio. Despite wartime disruptions that split production and led to the creation of Microtech Gefell, Georg Neumann rebuilt in post-war Berlin, launching the iconic U 47 tube-condenser microphone, which solidified the brand's legacy in recording history.
The brand specializes in professional recording equipment, renowned for its high-end condenser microphones like the U 47, U 67, and U 87, which dominate studios worldwide. Beyond mics, Neumann produces studio monitors, headphones, preamplifiers, audio interfaces such as the recent MT 48, and historically excelled in cutting lathes for mastering. This pro-audio emphasis sets it apart from consumer hi-fi categories like amplifiers, turntables, or cables.
Neumann commands an elite position in the market as the gold standard for professional recording, embodying precision engineering and unmatched fidelity prized by engineers and producers. Its products grace legendary sessions, blending vintage reverence with modern reliability, making it essential for discerning hi-fi enthusiasts seeking studio-grade accuracy rather than mid-tier or boutique consumer gear.
