At £146, this sits comfortably below the £244 median and even under the £113 price of the lower quartile only by a little, so it reads as a solid buy rather than a headline bargain. For a niche Matrix head, that’s a fair, buyer-friendly number in a market where the upper end stretches much higher.
The appeal here is the blend of portability and proper gig-capable output: the VB800 is known for classic British-leaning gain structure, a simple control set, and enough power for real stage use without the backache. If it’s complete and working cleanly, the value is in getting a distinctive, lightweight head that still has credible punch and character.

Matrix Audio traces its roots to Xi'an, China, where three high school classmates bonded over music and audio tinkering in the early 2000s. Their passion led to building homemade speakers during a 2001 summer holiday, evolving into formal collaboration after university in 2006 with the debut of the groundbreaking DAC DA-100Plus. The brand was officially registered in 2013 under Matrix Electronic Technology Co., LTD, embodying the founders' vision of balancing sonic precision and aesthetic harmony—reflected in the "matrix" name, drawn from mathematics, and their slogan "Into The Music."
The company specializes in high-performance digital audio source devices, starting with DACs and headphone amplifiers like the best-selling mini-i series. From 2016, they expanded into streaming solutions with companion apps, and by 2018 introduced integrated music streamers featuring power amplification, quad-core processors, and MA Player software. Today, their lineup emphasizes all-in-one Hi-Fi components that blend research, design, and manufacturing in-house, prioritizing seamless integration into modern homes.
Matrix Audio holds a strong position as a mid-to-high-end contender, prized for exceptional value, engineering excellence, and user-friendly execution that rivals legacy brands. Globally recognized for sound quality, build, and minimalist design, it appeals to discerning enthusiasts seeking complete digital ecosystems without complexity, earning acclaim from audiophiles worldwide.
